Spirits: Four.

“Contrary to popular belief, a list of things to do before one leaves this existence, is not a creation of the West.”

“You’re Mexican!” Jim started. The words were the most pointless he’d ever uttered. Talk about Captain Obvious? He thought, closing his eyes in cringing embarrassment.

“Yes. How did you guess?” Her smile hugged him as he emerged back into the world of the sighted. His shame receded like a morning summer mist.

“Your father owns the museum? Of course I know it, being on my bucket list.” His words were out of the traps before the hare. Another wave of chagrin washed over him.

“No pun intended, eh? Seriously though, he’s the curate.” She giggled again. The same soft, tuneful sound she’d emitted with the previous double entendre. Jim was always in awe of a person whose second language was English. To get the nuance of the humour he took for granted, was above the heads of many of his own countrymen.

“Oh yes. Bucket list, clever. You’ve heard of it then.” Jim attempted an empathetic expression of humour. It failed.

“Contrary to popular belief, a list of things to do before one leaves this existence, is not a creation of the West.” Marguerita’s face straightened, showing her features in their natural state of rest.

“I see,” Jim responded feebly. He was used to the put-down of an intelligent, superior foreigner.

“Don’t worry. Let’s talk about spirits. After all, that’s what we’re here for.” Her expression changed to welcome him back to this little excursion into the world of the dead.

“So, do we have ghosts all around us? Even on public transport?” Jim sat back in his chair and took a sip of his cooling latte.

“Let me stop you right there, Jim.” She held up a small hand with the confidence of stopping a juggernaut that was hurtling towards her. “There are no such things as ghosts. When we die, we die. That’s it. I have this on good authority. There is no afterlife, no Heaven and no Hell.”

She could have stopped a sixteen-wheeler in its tracks with that simple gesture and comment. Jim observed another dark hole in which he was about to tumble.

“But you said spirits!” His stilted replies would leave the casual observer confused as to who was the native speaker.

“Let me explain. Spirits are not ghosts. Nor are they dead people who can’t find rest in the other world. There is no other world” All Jim could do was give in to the day. Any agenda he’d had when he set off that morning had been removed in the skip she’d ordered as he stepped on the Metro. This enigma before him was owning the day and he was happy to gift it to her.

Jim sat still, silent. For the first time in over two years. It will all become clear, a voice in his head said. He’d handed over the keys and deeds of his consciousness to this young woman. He was happy to be evicted from the comfort zone he’d occupied since the loss of his wife.

“We’ll start with the basics. Spirits are not what they seem. This isn’t Ghostbusters. We’re not about to be covered in ectoplasm.” Jim was mesmerised by her monologue and she seemed to know it.

Definitely a page turner. My neighbour told me his partner and her daughter believe their flat could be haunted. They have both seen a floating woman in the night. My dreams are strange often I am awoken by what seems like the front door slaming shut or somene knoking hard on the door wierd.
